Mortgage rates are showing little change today after improving over the past few days, marking a more encouraging finish to a week of changing market conditions.
This week’s economic reports brought some unexpected movement, as higher inflation competed with other developments that helped support mortgage rates.
Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in higher than expected, initially putting pressure on mortgage rates. However, financial markets recovered some ground later in the day.
Thursday’s Producer Price Index (PPI) also showed higher inflation, but concerns about borrowing and spending by artificial intelligence (AI) companies led investors toward safer investments. This helped mortgage rates improve despite the inflation news.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh also indicated the economy is performing as expected, without giving a clear indication of the Fed’s next decision.
What This Means
The recent improvement is encouraging, especially following two higher-than-expected inflation reports. Mortgage rates may continue moving as markets respond to inflation, oil prices, and other developments.
Looking Ahead
Next week’s housing reports will offer a closer look at homebuilding and sales activity. Housing reports and unemployment claims will receive attention as markets look for more information about housing and employment.
