Mortgage rates showed some improvement earlier today after a weaker-than-expected jobs report initially helped mortgage market conditions. Some of that improvement later faded as investors continued working through the details of the report.
Markets had been watching higher oil prices, inflation concerns, and uncertainty about the Fed. Today’s employment report added a new piece to that picture. Job growth came in below expectations, and unemployment moved slightly higher.
At the same time, the overall employment picture was somewhat more mixed than the headline alone suggests.
What This Means
Today’s jobs report initially eased some pressure on mortgage rates, but markets remain sensitive to inflation and other economic developments. Rates can continue adjusting as investors weigh employment, oil prices, inflation, and what the Fed may do next.
Looking Ahead
Next week is lighter on major economic reports. Wednesday’s Fed Minutes will receive the most attention as markets look for more detail on how Fed officials are viewing inflation, employment, and future rate decisions. Weekly jobless claims may also influence market movement.
